Our company is dedicated to managing the new airport with a deep sense of responsibility, prioritizing environmental sustainability and social accountability. As a key public infrastructure provider, we balance our role with protecting the environment, supporting employees, and engaging the community. This holistic approach guides all airport development and operations.

Environmental

At IAHC S.A., we recognize the importance of sustainability in the development and operation of the new airport. Our environmental strategy focuses on minimizing our impact on the planet while enhancing the experience for travelers and the local community.

Sustainability is at the heart of the airport’s design. From the use of eco-friendly materials to energy-efficient infrastructure, every aspect of the construction is focused on reducing environmental impact. The terminal is being built to achieve LEED certification, ensuring high standards of sustainability and environmental performance.

In line with these principles from the outset of construction, we have implemented monitoring programs concerning the fauna and flora of the area to prevent disturbance to the natural environment. Additionally, we are running a comprehensive monitoring program that tracks key environmental indicators such as soil, water, and air quality, as well as noise levels. These indicators will continue to be monitored during the operational phase.

Furthermore, regarding the Environmental Management of the project, we are already implementing a holistic Environmental Management Plan certified with ISO 14001, which we also plan to apply in the operational phase.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE

At IAHC S.A., we are dedicated to energy efficiency in our new airport, aiming for up to a 20% reduction in energy consumption for the terminal compared to standard buildings. Our Building Management System (BMS) enables real-time monitoring and optimization of energy use, while all appliances and equipment are certified for low energy consumption.

To promote electric mobility, we provide electric vehicle chargers in the parking area and will operate a fleet of green electric vehicles. Additionally, photovoltaic systems will be installed on key buildings, harnessing renewable energy.

As part of our ongoing initiatives, we are striving to achieve ISO 50001 certification to optimize the airport’s Energy Management System and further reduce our environmental impact.

Additionally, the airport’s fuel farm and hydrant system is designed to be compatible with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), reinforcing our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of air travel. By supporting the use of SAF, we aim to contribute to cleaner, more sustainable aviation and help mitigate the environmental impact of air travel.

Our commitment to sustainability is also reflected in our terminal design, which is targeting LEED Silver certification and complies with the Greek Building Energy Efficiency Regulations, ensuring efficient resource use and low carbon emissions from day one.

Through these initiatives, IAHC S.A. is setting a new standard for energy-efficient airport operations and targeting Climate neutrality.

WATER CONSERVATION STRATEGY

We are targeting a reduction of over 30% in water consumption using efficient practices and systems. Our water systems will be metered and monitored using a Building Management System (BMS) to track usage and optimize efficiency. Certified low-consumption appliances and equipment will be deployed across the airport, alongside advanced irrigation systems to ensure maximum efficiency.

Flood protection infrastructure will regulate water flow during heavy rainfall, complemented by Low Impact Development (LID) practices, such as retention ponds and bioswales, to minimize runoff and enhance water quality.

A biological wastewater treatment plant will be established to serve both the airport and neighboring areas, contributing to the region’s environmental status. To ensure the efficient use of water, we will implement advanced irrigation systems, using treated water for landscaping, toilet flushing, and vehicle washing.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, we have implemented a solid waste management program for both the construction and operation phases of the airport. The program focuses on separating waste into different categories to ensure optimal management. Our priority is to reduce waste generation and maximize recycling, with the long-term goal of achieving zero waste.

PRESERVING NATURAL HERITAGE

In alignment with these efforts, IAHC S.A. is also committed to safeguarding the airport and surrounding areas through essential infrastructure projects.

We are deeply committed to preserving the natural landscape around the airport facilities. As part of this effort, we will replant centuries-old olive trees removed during construction in their final on-site locations, ensuring the continuity of a landscape that has been part of the region for centuries. Additionally, all plants used for landscaping will be native to the local area, minimizing water usage and supporting the island’s ecosystems.

Moreover, the terminal building is thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The façade of the terminal will feature natural ceramic materials, which not only harmonize with the local environment but also enhance the building’s sustainability.
